That's a tough one. If I didn't live in a snowy place it would be easy, the Mercedes. The Merc looks better, sounds better, and is built better. The Nissan is faster and has all wheel drive. |

Your ownership is perfect for my needs. I'm about to purchase an AMG C63 or the GTR. It will be a personal car with no "need" to serve any utilitarian purpose. I'm looking solely for a car that makes my heart go pitty pat when I walk up to it and sounds and drives like something special. I live in Houston, so snow/ice are not a factor. I like the C63 because of it's V8 sound and the way the tail will whip out anytime one wants to do so. I like the looks of the classy interior. I like the way a Mercedes gets up front valet parking. My wife prefers the C63. I like the GTR because it is a true supercar. I have run my wife's SLK 350 at local track weekends, but it really isn't much fun. I run it at the local M-B club autocrosses and it's a lot of fun. The GTR would be a killer for the track weekends and the C63 fun for the autocrosses. The GTR is a Nissan, not a Mercedes, though it has McLaren-Mercedes performance for slightly more than the price of a tricked-up C63.
I once owned a Ferrari 246 GTS and could not get near a cop without the radar gun coming out. I fear the same with the GTR. On the other hand, the C63 will fly under the radar gun unless I am doing something outrageous. I fear that I will have to drive the GTR much more conservatively than the C63, unless I am on the track. Could you comment on your experience with the two cars, please? |

It really depends. Mercedes C63 pros: -less expensive -great exhaust note -outrageously fast -better fit and finish than the Nissan -its an AMG Mercedes cons -I personally don't like the new C class styling -automatic transmission Nissan GT-R pros: -even faster than the C63 -great tranny (if it doesn't break )-all wheel drive -lots of technology cons -it sounds like a vaccuum cleaner -lots rattles and odds noises -boy racers stalk you -plasticy interior -unusable back seat I'd probably go with the Mercedes (especially if your wife prefers it) if I had to live with just one. I think you should look at a used CLK63 Black (if you don't need a back seat). You can pick up really low mileage ones for $85k. |

very interesting info in here. When it comes down to it its all personal preference. Make sure at the end of the day you are happy with what you purchased. If it was me personally GTR hands down. Most cops dont even know what it is and its an all round versatile car. Not only is it dominant on tarmac but its dominant on gravel, dirt, snow. It can also do drag, circuit, and autocross. So its a win win situation all around. And to me personally it has style and luxury as well. Of course it is hard to beat mercs luxury. But for a nissan its decently close for a nissa that is lol.

This is a tough one. I have owned alot of interesting cars and the ones I think I'm going to like I end up hating. DRIVE THEM BOTH! From my own experience, if you want a "toy" you want to be able to drive it like one! I bought a car which I thought would make a great casual driver but 70k in upgrades and repairs later it didn't feel so fun. From what I have read and from my limited time behind the wheel, the Gt-r is ready to go do whatever the hell you want to do. But if you can, test drive. Cheers

This is very useful information. The pros and cons are exactly my pros and cons. I've had to drive an auto for the past 10 years because my left knee (courtesy of Vietnam) could no longer deal with a clutch in traffic. I bought the SLK 350 in 2005 because it had the best available auto, at the time. I've since followed the arrival of the twin clutch trannys carefully. I almost bought the Evo MR, but decided it was a little too boy racer. I'm tempted by the new Porsche 911 C4S with PDK, but having owned one 911, I'm terribly unimpressed with design faults that appear in each new variation about the time the warranty lapses. There are just too many things that go wrong in the medium term for what should be a well proven design.
With regard to the "breaking tranny": I am presuming that this is a reference to the Launch control sensitivities and this is not a problem with the twin clutch being used in "race" mode? With regard to this, I had a conversation with one of the travelling Nissan reps at the Houston auto show. I said that the local dealers had not been particularly forthright about the warranty and launch control. She confirmed that if one uses launch control one does so without benefit of warranty. But, there is no warranty problem with using the suspension, shift speed, and stability control adjustability. This is fine for my purposes, as I don't find drag racing to be particularly interesting. The local Houston dealer that has sold the most GTR's said that their next two cars have been held up in Los Angeles for unknown reasons. I wonder if launch control is being disabled before being sent on to the dealers. Back to the C63 vs GTR: It seems to be coming down to which I want more, performance or tactile quality. I have heard rumors that the 2010 AMG cars will have direct injection. It would also seem that the wet clutch in the 2009 SL, replacing the 7-speed 's torque converter, would be a logical extention to the AMG line. These two changes "might" change the C63 performance enough to make the perceived quality of AMG win out over Nissan. Does anyone have an insight on these rumors? While I don't need 4 doors, I have developed a bias toward them just because of the cop visibility factor. What are GTR owner's experience with this problem? The boy racers all know what it is, but that's not the average cop; and perhaps just staying away from Red will be sufficient. I've driven the C63 and love it, but it is obvious that this much power in a 3800 lb car really calls out for AWD. Putting that much power through the rear wheels only to move that much mass can be spectacular, but for those of us that know the way around a race track know that it's not the quickest way around. I have not driven the GTR and probably won't be able to because the cars that come into Houston are pre-ordered. One of the area's first appeared at a Texas World Speedway Track weekend last summer, but the driver was a newbie running in novice class with on-board instructor, so I didn't get to follow it around and get an idea of it's potential first hand. However, every second hand report raves about it; so I think I can safely conclude that it will be the hobby track car to end all track cars. It's really good to have this forum to discus other people's opinions. While the decision is mine, it should be as fully informed as possible. |

Oh cmon the evo isnt "boy racer". lol I as a evo owner have met several other evo owners in my time and actually the age range is very interesting. Most of the evo owners are at least in the 30yr old range. And there is a decent percentage in the mid to high 20's. Of course that age range is still younger than you since you've noted that you were in nam. But I have experienced the evo crowd is actually a more refined crowd than you may think. I was certainly surprised when I found out.
And as far as the rumors of the direct injection and wet clutch they are IMHO still rumors at this point. That stuff is all over the benzworld forums and still no real conclusion to these matters. Until merc themselves debuts it on the main website then its rumors. Car companies always are making improvements right up until the car is launched in showrooms. |

I think the gtr has a "fly under the radar" look to it personally. Sort of like the chick everyone ignored in highschool who turned into a supermodel, or Porn star(R mode!).We don't have too many problems around here with the fuzz. They rubberneck the super cars like everyone else. They're too busy chasing down the diesel truck guys. The merc is a totally different animal than the gtr. I haven't been in the new one but my brother keeps a clk55 at his summer place. Great car but not the same catagory. Can't go wrong with either.
