Hawaii get more JDM cars being so close?

Ive been to Hawaii before. I actually did a TDY assignment there and I have talked to people there about this topic and they actually said the quite opposite. Its actually harder because the cars get imported first to Long Beach then from there they get imported back to Hawaii(I think). Because the cars go through customs first through LB. Its the only logical explanation. When I was there I didnt see very many large cargo ships come into the ports. Im pretty sure thats what it is but either way the people there say its actually the opposite. The people usually buy their cars from the mainland and import them there.
